Folks,
We discovered yesterday that base-config indeed calls pppconfig in one of its medium or low priority steps.
pppconfig allows for the configuration of PPP of course.
This package is maintained by John Hasler who seems to do really good work with it, according to the BTS.
So, as this is potentially used during Debian Installer, I think we haave to include it in the Debian Installer localisation effort like other non d-i core packages such as tasksel, shadow...
pppconfig is rather special as it does not use debconf for user input, but rather a debconf-style interface. IMHO, this leads to some glitches as for instance, messages are translated sentence by sentence while they are sometimes displayed in paragraphs.
Anyway, John's effort for i18n allows us to work on this, so I encourage you to start working on pppconfig messages translation.
Currently, the templates for this translation are in po/messages.po in the pppconfig package source tree.
Dennis seppy Stampfer is working on including it in d-i l10n statistics page (John, this is http://people.debian.org/~seppy/d-i/translation-status.html) so that it will be easier to get the material.
In the meantime, those of you who want to start working on it may get the package source "apt-get source pppconfig" and work on messages.po 134 strings...all of them being somewhat short, though.
There is a patch by Kenshi Muto currently waiting in the BTS for improving i18n as well as including a japanese translation. Kenshi showed it to me and it is great. John, could you please consider including it in a soon-to-come release, possibly? Please consider this a formal request by the D-I team...:-)
Of course, considering using debconf for these screen would be even better but I understand this is more huge work you maybe can't have time for.
Anyway, greetings to you all from Porto Alegre. Those who couldn't attend, we're missing you for sure...
